Houston Texans part ways with wide receiver ahead of playoff matchup with Kansas City

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans picked up receiver Diontae Johnson after Tank Dell’s season-ending injury. Today, they let him go.

The Texans announced on Tuesday that the team waived Johnson. At this point, it’s not clear why he was released.

Houston claimed Johnson off waivers from Baltimore on Dec. 23. He played in the Texans’ 32-12 win over the LA Chargers on Saturday, catching one pass for 12 yards. In his only other action as a member of the Texans, Johnson caught two passes for 12 yards against the Titans.

Johnson has been in the league since 2019, spending five seasons with the Steelers before splitting time between Carolina, Baltimore and Houston this year.

Johnson’s biggest production years came with Pittsburgh, with his best season being 2021. That year, he caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards and 8 touchdowns.

His release leaves Houston with a wide receiving group of Nico Collins, Robert Woods, Xavier Hutchinson and John Metchie.

Another move the team made today – they placed tight end Cade Stover on the injured list. Stover played in the game against the Chargers, catching four passes for 28 yards.
