Arteta: “It’s job almost done”

After his side swept Dinamo Zagreb aside by a 3-0 scoreline, Mikel Arteta wants one final solid result against Girona next week to finish our Champions League league phase campaign in style.

Goals from Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard added another three points to our total, leaving us third in the 36-team table with 16, and virtually securing a spot in the last eight in the process.

One point in Spain next week would secure it, while only a heavy defeat and a host of other clubs all winning matches potentially putting us in jeopardy. But having seen us perform magnificently in our seven matches so far, the boss is eyeing one more performance next week to secure a top-four spot, and gain a higher seed which could prove crucial at the business end of the competition.

Reflecting on his side’s display against Zagreb, Mikel said: “I’m very happy because it’s job almost done. We have another game and probably need something to achieve what we want.

“It was good. We had some big chances that we didn’t score. In the second half, we lost some control and were a bit leggy, that was the feeling that I had as well. Overall, we got the job done and well done. We didn’t concede a shot on target which is really positive again. It shows that the team is really well-rounded.

“Overall, scoring three goals, winning in the Champions League at home, another clean sheet at home – four in a row – and having made some changes as well. We rotated players that didn’t play that many minutes and they responded really well. Overall, I think it was a positive night.”

Tonight’s win completed four wins from four home matches in the league phase, having beaten Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk, Monaco and now Dinamo, without even conceding a goal. Since the start of last season, no team has won more home games (8) or kept more home clean sheets (8) in the competition than us.

Mikel feels that the players deserve plenty of praise for those results, stating: “It shows the consistency at this level, with the quality of the opposition that we played as well at home. It’s not easy, so credit to the boys and we go again on Saturday.

“Now it’s about enjoying tonight, then Wolves, then we’ll go to Girona to try to close the competition in the best possible way.”
