Sepulveda Fire: Evacuation warnings lifted, forward progress stopped

LOS ANGELES – Firefighters were successfully able to stop the forward progress of the Sepulveda FIre that erupted along the 405 Freeway late Wednesday night.

As of Thursday morning, the fire held at 40 acres.

Fire authorities said the blaze was reported around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22 on the northbound lanes of the freeway in the area of North Sepulvea Boulevard and Getty Center Drive.

An evacuation warning was temporarily issued for parts of Brentwood and Bel-Air before it was lifted overnight. Coindentally, the area dealt with evacuations during the Palisades Fire.

“Luckily, the winds were not a factor in this fire, even though we’re near a bottleneck for wind, said David Ortiez, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“This fire was topographically driven, meaning it was driven by the fuels and the angle of the hill,” he explained. “Because in Southern California we have so much dry vegetation, any spark that lands on the vegetation creates a fire immediately. Even without the wind, we’re in a very desperate situation because we need to get firefighters on the fires very quickly to keep them from becoming large fires like we had yesterday with the Hughes Fire.”

No injuries have been reported to civilians or firefighters. In addition, no structures were damaged.

Evacuation Warnings

Evacuation warnings were temporarily in effect for the following areas:

  • North of the northbound 405 Freeway and West Sunset Boulevard
  • South of Linda FLorda Drive and Maraga Drive
  • East of the northbound 405 Freeway

The warnings were lifted by 2 a.m. Thursday, the Los Angeles Fire Department said on social media.
