  13. Learner Tien’s upset of Daniil Medvedev was one of the most unexpected results in recent Australian Open history.
  14. Medvedev reached three of the last four finals in Melbourne and has appeared in six hard-court Grand Slam finals.
  15. Tien’s victory opened up the top half of the men’s singles bracket in favor of Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner.
  16. Fritz produced his second straight-set win of the tournament on Thursday. He is one of three seeded players left in his quarter of the draw.
  17. Sinner, the top seed, needed four sets to land in the third round. The Italian is on a collision course to face Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarters.
  18. Fritz and Tien are five of six American men left in the draw. Five of them reside in the top half of the draw. Three of those players are unseeded. Fritz could play No. 21 seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round if they both win in the third round.
