ustafson, about the new features of the annual summer gathering.
Today’s informational dispatch includes not only a roster of top acts from various genres and musical backgrounds but also new features and changes to the boots-on-the-ground experience, such as the Roo Residency, Infinity Stage, and more, which permeated as topics of conversation during the subsequent interview.
“We’re working with a company based out of the UK called Polygon Production. They have [created] a system for spatial 3D audio. You’ll see the words spatial audio, 360 degree audio, and 3D audio kind of thrown around, and I want to point out something that’s really important, lot of people have been commenting about this being a 360 degree stage, which is where you have a stage in the middle with an artist, and you have a crowd that’s in a circle around the stage. This is not that; it is way cooler.
“This is an artist on a traditional stage, but you are experiencing audio in a fully spatial, immersive environment. At any traditional music venue, you go to or at a festival, you’re looking at the artist in front of you and hearing all of the sound coming at you from the stage in front of you. This is audio coming at you from every direction, all at once.”
Parker notes this will be the system’s North American debut: “ It’s been done in Saudi Arabia and Thailand, and now will be, for the first time in North America at Bonnaroo in June, which is super exciting.” Scroll down to watch Polygon Productions’ 3D sound explained.
The Festival Director also noted that in the coming months, Bonnaroo will reveal the artist lineup slated for the Infinity Stage. He was also quick to note that none of the artists that were a part of today’s announcement will be repeats, and the Infinity Stage roster will represent newly added talent to the festival bill. “ That will be a whole new list of artists and programming,” he explained, touching on the space’s experimental nature, which will go beyond music and offer sound baths as a way to unwind.
Apart from the new technologically advanced listening experience, Bonnaroo will put on a three-day Roo Residency centered around live performances from Australian favorites King Gizzard & the Wizard Lizard–who appeared on Relix’s cover in March 2023, following their event debut, which occurred the year prior in 2022.
“They were such a huge hit [in 2022], and we have been playing around with the idea of having an artist residency, and they just felt like the perfect fit for that. And, they were excited when we brought the opportunity to their team. So they are going to bring us three different shows on three different stages, on three different days.”
As an added point of conversation, Parker explained Bonnaroo’s ticket pricing for this year’s event. He explained, “As you know, ticket prices are a hot topic in the world, and fans have more options than ever and are definitely feeling the financial constraints in the current economy. So, it’s really important to us to, one, be really competitive with our pricing in the landscape of festivals in general. And, two, give fans a chance tto buy the cheapest ticket they can, that it’s not just going to change after five minutes of the tickets being on sale. So, we’re going up with one-hour guaranteed pricing. That’s at $420. Yes, that’s intentional and actually cheaper than it was last year. While other festivals are raising the prices, we are fighting to make ours cheaper.”
Touching on the artist lineup, explained below, Parker broke down the importance of Luke Combs’ headlining slot on Thursday, June 12, mentioning the rising and appreciation of country music and the “Hurricane” singer’s mass fan base, which continuously fills stadium-sized arenas.
“The reason we thought it was important to start including country in Bonaroo’s programming is because the Bonnaroo name means ‘the best in the streets,’ and we’ve always been an all-encompassing festival and country is the biggest it has ever been right now–it’s on a world stage–and if we’re not including it, we’re not doing our jobs,” Parker added. “W e’re super excited to kick the weekend off with a little boot-scooting boogie on Thursday night.”
In addition to Combs’ billing, fellow day one performers include Relix cover artist Marcus King and reader favorites such as Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country, Kitchen Dwellers and Dogs In A Pile. Beyond the jam sphere, separate sets will be performed by party starter Dom Dolla, Sammy Virji, Green Velvet, 2hollis, Insane Clown Posse, Joey Valence & Brae, Wilderado, Max Styler, Azzecca, The Lemon Twigs, Wisp, Sofia Isella, Die Spitz, Hey Nothing, and The Droptines.
Friday, June 13, features headliner Tyler, the Creator, ahead of Goose, who will return to the festival for the second time after their 2022 debut. Beyond the improvisational favorites., John Summit, Glass Animals, Tipper, The Red Clay Strays, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Megadeth, Wallows, Foster the People, Slightly Stoopid, Flipturn, Of the Trees, JPEGMAFIA, Marina, Tape B, MJ Lenderman, BossMan Dlow, INZO, Levity, Mannequin Pussy, Leon Thomas, Cults, Aly & AJ, Matt Champion, Detox Unit, Rachel Chinouriri, Eater, Ginger Root, Bebe Stockwell and Effin make up day two musical contributors.
Olivia Rodrigo leads Saturday’s lineup and is trailed by Avril Lavigne, Justice, Nelly, GloRilla, Mt. Joy, RL Grime, Beabadoobee, Tyla, Jessie Murph, Gorgon City, Flatland, Cavalry, Hot Mulligan, Action Bronson, Crankdat, Dope Lemon, Gigi Perez, Wave to Earth, Claptone, Jade Cicada, What So Not, Daði Freyr, Ziggy Alberts, ROSSY, Destroy Boys, The Stews, Thee Sinseers & The Altons and AHEE. Also included are Modest Mouse, who made their Bonnaroo debut in 2005, three years into the festival’s run, the first of which occurred in 2002.
The fourth and final day of entertainment will take place on Sunday, June 15. Headliner Hozier leads the pack, which extends to include frames from Queens of the Stone Age, LSZEE, Remi Wolf, Raye, Royel Otis, Dispatch, Role Model, Barry Can’t Swim, Treaty Oak Revival, Big Gigantic, Jack’s Mannequin, ATLiens, Bilmuri, Saint Motel, James Arthur, Alex Warren, Zingara, Natasha Bedingfield, Alexandra Kay, Goldie Boutilier, Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge, GorillaT and YDG. Vampire Weekend also tops the list of artists gracing the Sunday stage. The band’s Bonnaroo history extends back to 2014 and early in the week billing, yet, over the past decade, they have climbed the ladder and ascended the festival bill.
