FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY Sunday into Monday due to threat of snow, sleet, freezing rain

(KFVS) – We’ve declared a First Alert Action Day Sunday into Monday due to the increasing threat of impactful snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The potential for a significant winter storm continues to increase.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for parts of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky through Monday.

Models continue to show a very wet system coming in from the west with a very strong warm punch from the south on Sunday. Areas to the south will likely end up with mainly rain. North, however, it may stay at or below freezing with significant amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain possible.(Source: KFVS)

Accumulation totals are still unknown at this time but travel impacts and damage to power lines are likely.

Today’s forecast

Skies are mostly cloudy today with highs in the mid-40s.

An isolated shower is possible through the afternoon for southern Illinois.

Another cold front moves through tomorrow which will drop our high temperatures to the 30s and lows in the 20s through the end of the week.

Our next big system arrives late Sunday night and will continue through Monday morning.

Next week is looking very cold, but dry with lows in the teens and highs mainly below freezing.
