During a recent appearance on Howie Mandel’s podcast, Gary Busey opened up about his 1988 accident and how he feels that he saw life after death. On Dec. 4, 1988, Busey was involved in a motorcycle accident. He was not wearing a helmet and, because of this, he was severely injured and suffered permanent brain damage.
After the accident, he said he visited a place where “everything, but nothing” is happening. He added, “I was shaken by an invisible guide and only my essence went. That’s your soul. Your soul is housed in the caliber of your spine.”

He said he went to “the spiritual realm of the supernatural, where I was surrounded by angels, which appeared to me as balls of light that were moving, changing color and breathing. And I felt trust, love and protection like I’ve never felt on earth before.” Busey said that he was given a choice that he could go now or return to Earth and that he chose Earth because he felt he had more to accomplish.
The accident as well as surviving a cocaine overdose in 1995 strengthened his Christian faith. The 80-year-old said that he is no longer afraid of death at all and revealed on the podcast that he believes DEATH stands for Don’t Expect a Tragedy Here. Busey is known for having these “Buseyisms.” Another is FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real. Since he felt so much peace during his near-death experience, even as he ages he doesn’t feel worried about how he is going to go.
He concluded, “It’s simply something you do for a birth to go to the other side, the spiritual zone, the spiritual side, where you float in harmony with everything you’ve been, everything you are and everything that’s coming to you.”
