KC International Airport prepared for KC’s upcoming winter weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With the first blast of winter making its way to the Kansas City area this weekend, the work to keep things running smoothly is already underway at Kansas City International Airport (MCI).

Justin Meyer, the Deputy Director of Aviation for Kansas City, said they’re already prepared. During a Thursday afternoon interview, he said crews will work additional shifts overnight Saturday to ensure the airfield stays safe and workable for all of their airline partners.

Visibility won’t be too much of a challenge, but the wind and ice could be.

“Ice is the problem as always. It’s a lot easier to just deal with snow when you can pre-treat for that, but ice is always a bigger challenge,” Meyer explained.

The FOX 4 weather team said to plan ahead as delays and cancellations are likely, predominantly on Sunday. Any delays and cancelations will be updated on each airline’s individual app before posting on the airport’s flight information boards.

“Just make sure your airline has your mobile number and perhaps you have the mobile app for the airline downloaded and your reservations there,” Meyer continued.

Bill Vaughn has most of the airline apps on his mobile device due to his job. He spent the Christmas and New Year holidays in Pasadena, California with his family where he watched his son-in-law march with the U.S. Navy Band in the Rose Parade.

As he gets ready to head home to Parkville on Saturday, he said he’s not too concerned about travel issues.

“Assuming everything holds as it is right now, we should be able to get in before the bad weather sets in. We got a direct flight from LAX to Kansas City on Saturday morning,” he said.

For those flying out and utilizing MCI’s surface lots, Meyer recommends taking a picture of where you parked your car so that you can find it in the chance that all vehicles are snow-covered.

“We do offer a dig-out service. If this ends up being a really big one, check with one of our customer service agents at the arrivals desk or the phone number posted in every single one of the economy shelters and they’ll be able to help you dig out or jumpstart if that’s needed.”

As of Thursday night, airlines are already starting to post travel advisories, which include Kansas City.
