Oscars nominations 2025: Full list of records broken

The Oscars nominations for 2025 have finally been announced—and a variety of impressive records have been broken.

After a long campaign season, the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were announced Thursday, January 23, live in Hollywood by Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang and Bottoms actress Rachel Sennott.

Originally scheduled for presentation on January 17, the nominations were pushed to January 23 due to the wildfires that have ravaged Los Angeles.

With the awards show scheduled for March 3, here is the full list of records that have been smashed.

Most Nominations for a Non-English Language Film

Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican cartel boss who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, dominated the nominations with 13 nods. This means it has broken the record for the most nominations for a non-English language film at the Oscars.

The genre-defying film earned recognition in major categories such as best picture, international feature film, original score and director. Its stars also shone, with Karla Sofía Gascón becoming the first openly transgender actor nominated for an Academy Award. The Spanish star earned the nod for her performance as the titular character in Jacques Audiard’s musical crime film, having been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Zoe Saldaña has also been nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, having already won a Golden Globe.

Most Nominations in the Original Song Category

Songwriter Diane Warren now has 16 Oscar nominations in the original song category, breaking her previously held record of 15. Her most recent nomination is for “The Journey,” the end credits song from Tyler Perry’s Netflix film The Six Triple Eight.

This is Warren’s eighth consecutive nomination in the category in the last eight years. While Warren is yet to win in the category, she received an honorary Oscar in 2022.

Multiple Musical Performances Are Nominated in Best Actress

Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) and Gascón (Emilia Pérez) earned their much-anticipated Best Actress Oscar nominations on Thursday, marking a historic moment for musicals. This is only the second time in Oscar history—and the first in 60 years—that multiple performances from musicals have been nominated in the Best Actress category.

When considering only traditional musicals with non-diegetic music, this last occurred during the golden age of musicals in the 1960s. In 1964, Julie Andrews and Debbie Reynolds were nominated for their roles in Mary Poppins and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, respectively, with Andrews taking home the Oscar.

This year’s best actress lineup is unusually strong in comedy/musical performances, a distinction often made by the Golden Globes. Four of the five Oscar nominees—Erivo, Gascón, Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance)—were part of the Globes’ comedy/musical category.
