RuPaul’s Drag Race UK champion ‘The Vivienne’ passes away at 32

James Lee Williams, widely known as The Vivienne, has died at the age of 32. Publicist Simon Jones confirmed the news, describing the drag performer as “warm-hearted, incredibly loved, and amazing.”

The Vivienne gained fame as the winner of the first RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. The show expressed sadness over the loss, stating on social media: “She will be dearly missed, but her legacy as a champion of creativity and authenticity will live on.” Judge Michelle Visage added, “Her humour, talent, and wit inspired so many”, as reported by BBC.

Born in Wales, Williams adopted the stage name due to their love of Vivienne Westwood designs. Beyond Drag Race, The Vivienne showcased versatility in roles like the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz musical and competing on ITV’s Dancing on Ice.

Tributes poured in from fellow drag stars, with Cheryl Hole writing, “I will love you forever, Viv,” and Bimini Bon Boulash admitting to being in “total shock”, The Guardian reported.

In a 2019 interview, The Vivienne described their style as a blend of “old school and new school drag,” highlighting comedy and vocal impersonations as their strengths.

Williams was also a victim of a homophobic attack in 2022, when Alan Whitfield assaulted them in Liverpool. Speaking in court, Williams said they were “lucky” to be a 6ft ex-rugby player able to handle the attack, though their face remained bruised for a week.

BBC controller Fiona Campbell called the news “deeply sad,” honouring The Vivienne’s achievements and extending thoughts to their family, friends, and fans.

Publicist Simon Jones requested privacy for the family, stating, “No one made me laugh as much as Viv did. Their wit and genius were unmatched.”
